An irreverent comedy by first-time director, Edward Mallillin, "Brown Soup Thing " follows the story of a young girl working on an elementary school video project about "What it means to be Filipino. Part of the 2008 CAFF.

Can you believe that it’s been five years since we brought a small dream to reality?  Well, believe it!

We’re now at the larger and newly refurbished Portage Theatre. And our lineup for the 2008 showcase looks to be the best we’ve ever put together.

Best of all, to celebrate our 5th anniversary, we’re providing free one-day passes for a limited number of students and seniors each day of the festival. See the special coupon below for more information, or go to our website, www.CFAFF.org .

Opening Night Reception & Feature
We’re again kicking off our weekend festival with a free reception sponsored by Isla Filipina Restaurant (2501 W. Lawrence Ave) and Crema Pastry (5159 N. Lincoln Ave), starting at 6:30 pm, Friday, Nov. 7.

At 8:00 pm, our opening night feature will be the critically acclaimed Santa Mesa, about a Filipino American orphan who must return to a grandmother, country and way of life he has never known.

Music Video Awards and Live Performances
Afterwards, we’ll have our first-ever music video awards and announce our $1000 prize for best Filipino music video.

But along with the 5 music video finalists, we’ll be rocking the house with two of Chicago’s hottest bands:

* Paolo Escobar & the Prescription (www.myspace.com/paolosongs). Paolo Escobar is a soul/R&B acoustic guitarist who enjoys mesmerizing people with his funky percussive musical style. With a list of influences including Stevie Wonder, Marc Broussard, Thelonious Monk, Marvin Gaye and the late great Donny Hathaway, his music is sure to bring a distinct flavor to any scene. Aside from his music, Paolo is also an illustrator and stage actor. He met the Prescription during a performance at the Refuge Arts Center in Skokie and is currently working on new and exciting songs.

* BAGWIS (www.myspace.com/bagwisband ). BAGWIS is a collective of Filipino cultural workers, activists and musicians who began writing and performing original music in 1998 as a contribution to the first annual Kultural Night of Resistance celebrating the centennial year of Philippine Independence. Since then, Bagwis has composed several dozen pro-people songs and participates in community building for our youth and migrant workers.
